Medical Ear Piercing

in Westfield, NJ

If your child wants to get their ears pierced, your best bet is to have it done by a doctor, nurse, or other trained professional. That way, you can ensure the procedure is done safely and correctly.

At Bee Kind Pediatrics, your child’s safety is our priority. We use pre-packaged disposable piercing equipment and follow strict sterile precautions.

Our staff has researched the best technology available for ear piercing and is excited to offer this service to patients and non-patients of the practice.

Why Medical Ear Piercing?

You could take your child to get their ears pierced at a jewelry store or mall kiosk, but there are several good reasons to have it done by one of our medical professionals instead:

Cleanliness and Safety

Two of the major risks of piercing a child’s ear are infection and allergic reactions. Using completely sterile, hypoallergenic, and medical-grade earrings, we reduce the risk of allergic reactions and infection. We use Blomdahl as our system for piercing as it is sterile and hypoallergenic. This system is only available to medical professionals.

Accuracy

A trained professional is more likely to pierce your child's ears correctly than someone who is not medically trained. This is especially important if your child has unusually shaped or small earlobes.

Pain Management

Our medical professionals can give your child a numbing cream to help reduce ear-piercing pain.

Less Risk of Infection

When done correctly, ear piercing by a medical professional carries a very low risk of infection. It is very common for children to experience some redness and swelling after getting their ears pierced, but this usually goes away within a few days.

Convenience

Many doctor's offices and clinics offer ear piercing as a walk-in service, so you don't need to make an appointment. Especially if you are a patient, you may already be familiar with the staff and comfortable with the facility.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The ear-piercing procedure takes only a few minutes.

First, our medical professional will clean your child’s earlobes with an antiseptic solution to reduce the risk of infection.

Next, they will apply a numbing cream to help reduce the pain.

Once the earlobes are numb, they will use a sterile needle to pierce the lobe.

Finally, they will insert the earring into the newly pierced hole.

Your child can choose from various hypoallergenic earrings, including titanium or medical-grade silicone.

Why Choosing the Right System and Studs Matter

Unfortunately, there’s no regulation of piercings for children in the US. Many people have allergic reactions to certain metals, especially nickel. Nickel is found in most jewelry, as well as jewelry that contains gold and silver alloys.

The first stud of any child needs to be nickel-free and hypoallergenic. We have done the research for you and will provide hypoallergenic nickel-free studs for your child’s first piercing for an additional fee if desired.

Why Age Matters

It is best to wait for your child or loved one to be developed. Additionally, due to the risk of infection with ear piercings, it is also best to wait until your child has completed at least two or more sets of vaccinations. For this reason, we do not pierce ears until the child is at least six months old.

Addressing Pain

Depending on your child’s age, we are able to use either pharmacologic or non-pharmacologic pain techniques.

Under pharmacology, we can apply topical numbing agents to the earlobe prior to piercing, depending on the child’s age. If non-pharmacological techniques are preferred or are necessary due to age restrictions, we can also use medicine-free numbing agents and calming techniques with a parent to provide the best experience.
