Many parents are unaware that there is specialized training for pediatricians and emergency medicine doctors in the area of pediatric emergency medicine. Due to the few specially trained physicians in pediatric emergency medicine, you may not see this type of specialist even in an emergency room.
The vast majority of children seen in a pediatric emergency room do not require that high of a level of acute care and may be able to be treated at home or in an outpatient setting.
Dr. Blair Rolnick’s additional pediatric emergency medicine training allows her to quickly triage patients and assess if they truly need a visit to the emergency hospital or can be managed at home or in the office. Moreover, families can have peace of mind knowing that their child is being treated by an expert during this potentially stressful time.

What is Acute Care?
An acute injury or illness has a sudden onset and typically occurs for a limited duration. Therefore, acute conditions demand prompt, expert medical attention but do not usually require hospitalization.
Acute care is a branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats patients with acute illnesses and injuries. These may be life-threatening or potentially fatal conditions, and many will not go away independently. Therefore, critical care usually occurs in an emergency room or an intensive care unit (ICU).
Thanks to Dr. Rolnick’s specialized training in pediatric emergency medicine at a level one trauma center, she is uniquely able to provide both traditional care and acute, urgent care to patients.
Common reasons for acute care in adolescents include:

Signs Your Child May Need Acute Care
Not every medical concern requires acute care. It isn’t always easy to tell when an illness or injury is serious enough to require immediate medical attention. However, there are a few warning signs that you may need to seek out acute care for your infant, toddler, child, or teenager.
If your child has any of the following symptoms, it is best to seek medical help right away:
- Sudden onset of symptoms including severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, hives, rashes, hyperventilation
- Bluish or gray skin color
- Severe and persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Intense abdominal pain
- Uncontrollable bleeding
- Change in mental status or confusion
- Loss of consciousness
