Pediatric Acute Care

in Westfield, NJ

When your child is suddenly ill and needs immediate care, you may feel overwhelmed. It is incredibly worrying when your child is sick or injured.

Many parents are unaware that there is specialized training for pediatricians and emergency medicine doctors in the area of pediatric emergency medicine. Due to the few specially trained physicians in pediatric emergency medicine, you may not see this type of specialist even in an emergency room.

The vast majority of children seen in a pediatric emergency room do not require that high of a level of acute care and may be able to be treated at home or in an outpatient setting.

Dr. Blair Rolnick’s additional pediatric emergency medicine training allows her to quickly triage patients and assess if they truly need a visit to the emergency hospital or can be managed at home or in the office. Moreover, families can have peace of mind knowing that their child is being treated by an expert during this potentially stressful time.

Our team of experienced pediatric care professionals will provide your child with the best possible care. In addition, we will work tirelessly to help your child get well from diagnostics to treatment, as quickly as possible.

What is Acute Care?

An acute injury or illness has a sudden onset and typically occurs for a limited duration. Therefore, acute conditions demand prompt, expert medical attention but do not usually require hospitalization.

Acute care is a branch of medicine that diagnoses and treats patients with acute illnesses and injuries. These may be life-threatening or potentially fatal conditions, and many will not go away independently. Therefore, critical care usually occurs in an emergency room or an intensive care unit (ICU).

Thanks to Dr. Rolnick’s specialized training in pediatric emergency medicine at a level one trauma center, she is uniquely able to provide both traditional care and acute, urgent care to patients.

Common reasons for acute care in adolescents include:

  • Difficulty breathing/obstructed airways

  •  Strains and sprains

  • Superficial injuries (falls, crashes, and other sports/playground injuries)

  • Broken bones

  • Head injury/trauma

Common acute illnesses include:

  • Pneumonia
  • Appendicitis
  • Kidney stones
  • Dehydration

If your child is experiencing these symptoms, please do not hesitate to give us a call. We will be more than happy to help your family!

Signs Your Child May Need Acute Care

Not every medical concern requires acute care. It isn’t always easy to tell when an illness or injury is serious enough to require immediate medical attention. However, there are a few warning signs that you may need to seek out acute care for your infant, toddler, child, or teenager.

If your child has any of the following symptoms, it is best to seek medical help right away:

  • Sudden onset of symptoms including severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, hives, rashes, hyperventilation
  • Bluish or gray skin color
  • Severe and persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Intense abdominal pain
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Change in mental status or confusion
  • Loss of consciousness

It may not be evident in some cases if your young one needs acute care. If you are unsure, it is always better to err on the side of caution and give us a call. We would be happy to help you figure out the best course of action.

Acute Asthma Exacerbations:

We offer treatment for young patients experiencing acute asthma exacerbations. We will work with you to develop a treatment plan to help you get your asthma under control.

Flu/Fever Treatment:

Sometimes, when children get a fever, simply staying home is sufficient. However, if your child's fever is over 101 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two days, they should be seen by a doctor. Dr. Rolnick's office offers walk-in fever clinics to help you get your child the care they need as soon as possible.

Allergy Management:

If your little one has an allergic reaction, our office will be able to take care of them! We will work with you to develop a treatment plan to help you manage your child’s allergies and prevent future reactions.

Burn Care:

If it doesn't require a specialist, our pediatric office can provide your child with burn care. However, we may refer you to an expert if they need highly-specialized treatment.

Foreign Body Removal:

If something gets stuck in your kid's ear, nose, throat, or anywhere else, our healthcare professionals can remove it! We will work to remove the object as quickly and safely as possible.

Upper Respiratory Infections:

We offer treatment for patients with upper respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, sinus infections, and bronchitis. We work with our patients to develop a treatment plan to help them get over their illnesses and prevent future ones.

Diagnostic Testing:

We offer a variety of diagnostic tests to help identify the cause of symptoms. These tests can include blood work and X-rays. We can carry these out immediately and work quickly to solve your child's medical problems.

Lab services:

Phlebotomy, EKGs, and IVs are just some of the lab services. Our pediatricians can provide your child with the tests needed to help identify symptoms and develop a treatment plan.

Pain Reduction Techniques:

Our expert pediatricians are well-versed in pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain reduction techniques. We will work with you to find the best way to reduce your child’s pain and help them get on the road to recovery.

Once we have diagnosed the cause of your child’s symptoms, we will tailor a treatment plan to their specific needs. Our pediatric experts will help you plan your child’s next steps once they feel better. Discharge planning may include follow-up appointments, referrals to specialists, or home care instructions. We want to make sure that you have everything your child needs to make a full recovery.
