Navigating the Fall Surge: Protecting Your Child’s Health

The transition to fall brings exciting new routines and school schedules—but it also brings germs. As children return to classrooms and daycare, we typically see a surge in common illnesses like colds, RSV, the flu, and strep.

As a concierge pediatrician in Westfield, NJ, my goal is to keep your family healthy while providing the personalized care and direct access you need to feel supported all season long.

Why Fall Illnesses Surge

When children gather indoors, viruses spread rapidly—especially among infants and toddlers who are still building their immunity. The most common seasonal illnesses include:

  • RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): A common virus that can lead to serious respiratory issues in infants.
  • Influenza (Flu): A seasonal virus that peaks during the fall and winter months.
  • Common Colds: Standard viral upper respiratory infections.
  • Bacterial Infections: Frequent occurrences of strep throat and ear infections.

RSV Prevention: What Parents Need to Know

For years, RSV prevention was limited to handwashing and supportive care. Now, Beyfortus—a one-time injection of antibodies—offers an exciting new tool to protect our youngest patients from severe infection.

Who should receive Beyfortus?

When children gather indoors, viruses spread rapidly—especially among infants and toddlers who are still building their immunity. The most common seasonal illnesses include:

  • Infants under 8 months: Any baby entering their first RSV season (typically October–March).
  • High-risk toddlers: Certain eligible children up to 24 months old.

Early planning is key—consult with your pediatrician to see if your baby is eligible.

Flu Shots & Fall Vaccines

  • The flu shot is recommended for all children over 6 months old. For maximum protection, it is ideal to administer the vaccine in September or October. If your child is due for other routine immunizations—such as MMR, DTaP, Varicella, or COVID—we can review and update their schedule during the same visit.

Simple Back-to-School Health Tips

  • Prioritize Handwashing: Teach kids to wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water.
  • Optimize Sleep: Well-rested children have stronger immune systems to fight off germs.
  • Focus on Nutrition: Serve balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables, and proteins.
  • Stay Home When Sick: Keep children home during fevers or active illness to prevent community spread.
  • Establish Direct Care: Have a trusted pediatrician you can reach immediately when questions arise.

The Concierge Advantage: Support When It Matters

My daughter just had her ears pierced today and I can tell you that both Maria and Dr. Blair couldn’t have been more professional or patient with my daughter. She also engaged very well with my daughter made her feel comfortable and that means a lot to any parent of a child. I would highly recommend Dr. Blair and her office to any parent that’s looking for a pediatrician for their child.

We’ve been going to Beekind for about 6 months now and I have nothing but great things to say about this practice. First, the space itself is absolutely stunning. With the calming colors and whimsical designs, it’s hard to believe you’re in a doctor’s office. The exam room is more like a play space that immediately put my child at ease. But what truly sets this practice apart is the care. Dr. Rolnick and her staff are not only incredibly knowledgeable and up-to-date on the latest in pediatric medicine, but they also take the time to really listen to your concerns and meet you where you’re at. We’ve never felt rushed and everyone is always extremely patient and kind. In fact, every time we’ve visited either Dr. Rolnick or FNP Santucci have sat with us for at least an hour, playing with my child and answering every question I’ve had. The personalized attention we receive here is unmatched. Plus, they have the most up-to-date technology which makes telehealth visits a great option if you can’t make it into the office. It’s a completely different level of care—proactive, thorough, and deeply human. We feel so lucky to have found this place. Highly recommend!

The health, wellbeing, and development of my baby are the most important things for me as a parent, and to be able to invest in good doctors is crucial to ensure we’re providing our baby the best we can. After having an upsetting experience at another pediatrician we were recommended this pediatric practice by our friends and we’ve been so happy with the choice. Not only they’re thorough with their assessments, blood work, eye exams, etc, they truly make you feel cared for. They’re also vaccine friendly and will allow you to space out vaccinations if needed. My husband and I highly recommend this place!

If you’re reading these reviews wondering if you should join Dr. Rolnick’s practice at Bee Kind Pediatrics, this is your sign to go for it. We had our daughters’ first appointments today, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. Switching doctors can be a daunting process, but after today, we’re confident we made the right decision for our girls. From the moment we walked in, Kelsey made us feel so welcome. She was warm, friendly, and took the time to explain everything about the practices and appointment in a way that was clear for the entire family. We felt completely comfortable and informed every step of the way. Dr. Rolnick is truly exceptional. To say she is thorough is an understatement. She took the time to make sure both of our daughters felt safe and comfortable in her care, and that sense of security extended to us as parents. She listened attentively to every concern and responded with kindness, understanding, and action. The best part? Our 5-year-old left the office saying she loved her new doctor and asked if Dr. Rolnick could be her doctor “forever.” If that doesn’t speak volumes about the care they provide, I don’t know what does. Thank you Dr. Rolnick and staff!

Switching to Bee Kind was the best decision for our family. Dr. Rolnick’s 'slow medicine' approach means we never feel rushed, and she truly listens to every concern we have. It feels like having a doctor in the family who truly cares about our children’s long-term wellness.
