Pain-Conscious Pediatric Care

Medical care doesn’t have to feel scary. At Bee Kind Pediatrics, we take your child’s comfort seriously. Vaccines, blood draws, and other procedures are approached with evidence-based pain-reduction techniques, thoughtful preparation, and an environment designed around the child’s experience — not simply getting through the appointment as quickly as possible. Our goal is to reduce pain, fear, and anxiety while helping children build a healthier, more trusting relationship with medical care.

A Different Approach to Pediatric Procedures

For a child, a vaccine or blood draw isn’t always a small moment. Fear of needles and medical procedures can make an appointment stressful for children and parents alike — and negative experiences can influence how a child feels about healthcare long after the visit is over. At Bee Kind Pediatrics, we believe minimizing unnecessary pain and distress is an important part of providing high-quality pediatric care. Instead of expecting children to simply “get through it,” we use age-appropriate, evidence-based techniques to make procedures more comfortable and help children feel informed, supported, and in control whenever possible.

Evidence-Based Comfort Techniques

Every child responds differently to medical procedures, which is why there isn’t one comfort technique that works for everyone.

Depending on your child’s age, preferences, level of anxiety, and the procedure being performed, we can incorporate a combination of strategies designed to reduce fear and discomfort.

These may include:

  • Comfort positioning with a parent or caregiver
  • Age-appropriate distraction
  • Virtual reality experiences
  • Breathing and relaxation techniques
  • Developmentally appropriate preparation
  • Giving children appropriate choices and a sense of control
  • Pharmacological pain-reduction options when appropriate

The goal isn’t simply to distract a child from what’s happening. It’s to create an experience that feels safer, calmer, and more manageable.

Pain-Conscious Vaccinations

Vaccines are an important part of preventive pediatric care, but receiving them doesn’t have to be unnecessarily painful or frightening.

Bee Kind Pediatrics takes a pain-conscious approach to vaccine administration, combining preparation, comfort techniques, and pain-reduction options based on your child’s individual needs. We take the time to explain what will happen in an age-appropriate way and create a plan for making the experience as comfortable as possible.

For children who have had difficult vaccine experiences in the past or who experience significant needle anxiety, that extra time and preparation can make a meaningful difference.

Individualized Vaccine Scheduling Conversations

Parents deserve the opportunity to ask real questions about their child’s vaccines and receive thoughtful answers from their physician. At Bee Kind Pediatrics, vaccine conversations aren’t delivered from a script.

Dr. Rolnick will take the time to discuss your child’s recommended vaccines with you, including questions about timing, scheduling, benefits, potential side effects, and other concerns you may have.

These conversations may include:

  • Your child’s current vaccination history
  • Recommended vaccines for their age
  • Timing and spacing of vaccines
  • Catch-up vaccination when necessary
  • Travel-related vaccination needs
  • Expected side effects and what to monitor
  • Your individual questions and concerns

Our goal is to make sure parents understand their child’s care and feel comfortable asking questions before making healthcare decisions.

On-Site Blood Draws by Your Physician

A blood draw shouldn’t automatically mean another appointment, another waiting room, and another unfamiliar provider. When appropriate, blood draws can be performed on-site by your child’s physician, allowing the procedure to happen in a familiar environment with someone who already understands your child’s medical history and individual needs.
Keeping blood draws within the practice can help:
  • Reduce unnecessary trips to outside laboratories
  • Minimize time spent in unfamiliar waiting rooms
  • Allow for personalized preparation before the procedure
  • Incorporate your child’s preferred comfort techniques
  • Keep testing and follow-up more closely connected to your child’s care

For difficult blood draws, Dr. Rolnick’s Pediatric Emergency Medicine training also allows her to use ultrasound guidance when appropriate to help locate a vein and minimize unnecessary attempts.

Prescription-Strength Skin Numbing

Pain management can begin before a needle ever touches the skin. When appropriate, Bee Kind Pediatrics can use prescription-strength topical numbing medication to decrease sensation at the procedure site and help make vaccines, blood draws, and other needle-based procedures more comfortable. Because numbing medication may need time to take effect, we can help families plan ahead when possible so that it can be incorporated into the visit appropriately. For children with significant needle anxiety or a history of difficult procedures, combining topical numbing with other comfort techniques can create a substantially different medical experience.

A Calm, Unhurried Environment

Children often need time to become comfortable in a medical setting — especially when they’re nervous about what’s coming next. Bee Kind Pediatrics is intentionally designed around a more personalized, unhurried model of care. Rather than rushing through a procedure to stay within a short appointment slot, we make room for preparation, questions, comfort strategies, and reassurance.

That can mean giving your child time to:

  • Understand what is going to happen
  • Ask questions
  • Become comfortable with the environment
  • Choose appropriate comfort or distraction techniques
  • Sit with a parent or caregiver
  • Take a moment before beginning

Sometimes the difference between a frightening medical experience and a manageable one is simply having the time to do it thoughtfully.

Building Confidence for Future Care

Pain-conscious care isn’t only about making today’s vaccine or blood draw easier. Positive medical experiences can help children develop confidence, learn coping skills, and build trust with their physician. Our goal is to help prevent fear from becoming more intense with each appointment and instead show children that their comfort matters. By approaching procedures with patience, preparation, and evidence-based pain reduction, we hope to create a healthier relationship with medical care that children can carry with them as they grow.

My daughter just had her ears pierced today and I can tell you that both Maria and Dr. Blair couldn’t have been more professional or patient with my daughter. She also engaged very well with my daughter made her feel comfortable and that means a lot to any parent of a child. I would highly recommend Dr. Blair and her office to any parent that’s looking for a pediatrician for their child.

We’ve been going to Beekind for about 6 months now and I have nothing but great things to say about this practice. First, the space itself is absolutely stunning. With the calming colors and whimsical designs, it’s hard to believe you’re in a doctor’s office. The exam room is more like a play space that immediately put my child at ease. But what truly sets this practice apart is the care. Dr. Rolnick and her staff are not only incredibly knowledgeable and up-to-date on the latest in pediatric medicine, but they also take the time to really listen to your concerns and meet you where you’re at. We’ve never felt rushed and everyone is always extremely patient and kind. In fact, every time we’ve visited either Dr. Rolnick or FNP Santucci have sat with us for at least an hour, playing with my child and answering every question I’ve had. The personalized attention we receive here is unmatched. Plus, they have the most up-to-date technology which makes telehealth visits a great option if you can’t make it into the office. It’s a completely different level of care—proactive, thorough, and deeply human. We feel so lucky to have found this place. Highly recommend!

The health, wellbeing, and development of my baby are the most important things for me as a parent, and to be able to invest in good doctors is crucial to ensure we’re providing our baby the best we can. After having an upsetting experience at another pediatrician we were recommended this pediatric practice by our friends and we’ve been so happy with the choice. Not only they’re thorough with their assessments, blood work, eye exams, etc, they truly make you feel cared for. They’re also vaccine friendly and will allow you to space out vaccinations if needed. My husband and I highly recommend this place!

If you’re reading these reviews wondering if you should join Dr. Rolnick’s practice at Bee Kind Pediatrics, this is your sign to go for it. We had our daughters’ first appointments today, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. Switching doctors can be a daunting process, but after today, we’re confident we made the right decision for our girls. From the moment we walked in, Kelsey made us feel so welcome. She was warm, friendly, and took the time to explain everything about the practices and appointment in a way that was clear for the entire family. We felt completely comfortable and informed every step of the way. Dr. Rolnick is truly exceptional. To say she is thorough is an understatement. She took the time to make sure both of our daughters felt safe and comfortable in her care, and that sense of security extended to us as parents. She listened attentively to every concern and responded with kindness, understanding, and action. The best part? Our 5-year-old left the office saying she loved her new doctor and asked if Dr. Rolnick could be her doctor “forever.” If that doesn’t speak volumes about the care they provide, I don’t know what does. Thank you Dr. Rolnick and staff!
